Steve Yates Nov 17, 2004:
north-central is the only one in the list that is clearly not an administrative district, whereas SW could be either. I would go with both of them hyphenated.
Non-ProZ.com Nov 17, 2004:
so the north-central is with a hyphen then also?
David Moore (X) Nov 17, 2004:
That would certainly be my take; there IS no administrative district "North Central England" anyway, so that one has to be geographical.
Non-ProZ.com Nov 17, 2004:
so then it should read:

..... in south-west England, north-central England, etc...?
Non-ProZ.com Nov 17, 2004:
the complete sentence is Outside the centres of concentrated population, there are great open spaces of mountains, forests and moorland in South West England, North Central England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Vielen Dank fr euren Input!
Non-ProZ.com Nov 15, 2004:
The sentence is: There are many natural and man-made (cannot remember the noun) in South West England, North Central England, Wales and Scotland.
David Moore (X) Nov 15, 2004:
We assume the question DOES relate to the region, rather than the geographical area?

south-west England

is more correct when speaking (or writing, rather!) about a more-or-less geographical area.

South West England, as the region, incorporates the counties of Devon and Cornwall, Somerset, and Gloucestershire, and Bath and Bristol. Any less than this should be referred to as \"south-west England\" or \"THE south-west *OF* England\"

If I were to write \"the south-west /AE southwest\" OF England, there would be no mistake; even so, the sentence now makes it perfectly clear that this is the correct answer. I know England well, and can assure you that south-west England has indeed tracts of moorland and forest in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall; there are hills too - hardly mountains, as the none of them hit the 1,000-metre mark - but even the forests are pretty modest. At all events, the REGION is \"South West England\"; this is the area, loosely south-west of Bristol and not the whole region.

I\'d say \"north-central England\" too.

agree Aisha Maniar : you're quite right; the reference here is to the "south-west" of England and not the "region" known as the South West! Otherwise, it could be confusing to the reader.

agree DGK T-I : south-west England to describe a geographical area (the same, a bit more eg: Hampshire, or a bit less),(South West England is the name for a specific region (includes Wilts &Dorset)) http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/South West England

agree Ann C Sherwin : But if you were translating for a US readership, it would be written solid: southwest England.

South West

Declined
As a region, it is capitalised like a county. No hyphen.
Peer comment(s):

neutral David Moore (X) : Sorry, but I must remove my "agree", as it is NOT the region itself to which reference is made here
