English term

which one

Non-PRO English Other Journalism
Dear All,

A columnist is writing about the smoking ban in a national daily, which will come into force in a couple of weeks and urging the public to welcome the ban on smoking in public places and not to tolerate the violators.

Which of the following would be the most powerful expression to be used at the end of the article? Many thanks

1 - If we do not stand up for our rights, we cannot win this fight.
2 - Unless we stand up for our rights, we cannot win this fight.
3 - If we do not stand up for our rights, we will not win through in the end.

option 2

Sounds most striking and natural-sounding English translation to me.
Note from asker:
Thanks a million.

agree Will Matter : I agree. To me, #1 sounds somewhat 'stilted' and #3 sounds 'artificial' or 'overly pedantic'. #2 is the most natural sounding option.

I totally agree. Thanks, Will
agree Jack Doughty : Option 1 is not bad, but 2 is probably better. I wouldn't choose 3.

Thanks, Jack.
agree Egil Presttun : Ok, most natural-sounding English.

Thanks, Egil
agree Ken Cox : and with Jack -- the third option is not natural English

Thanks, Ken
agree Cagdas Karatas : Wouldn't "shall not" be a good option in the second part of the sentence? I feel this sentence indicates predestination.

Many thanks :-)// to me 'shall not' and 'cannot' would mean exactly the same here.
