English term

linearly scale

English Tech/Engineering IT (Information Technology)
What is the exact meaning of 'linearly scale' in the paragraph below? This is not to interpret English as it is, but I think you need to know this technical term. I've searched google, but I'm not sure.
It seems to mean 'to measure with a line'. Can I translate it this way?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The ability to linearly scale and quickly add or subtract nodes as volume demands makes them well-suited to big data analytics jobs with data sets highly variable in size.

@ Asker It has absolutely nothing to do with drawing lines with a ruler! That is a very simplistic way of looking at the individual words in isolation. 'Linear' here refers to a specific concept in mathematics, and 'scale' has a special meaning in IT or business contexts.
Chris Says Bye Feb 9, 2023:
Linear means linear. There must be a word for linear in your language too. So put linear.

proportionally adjust

I think "linearly scale" means to increase or decrease the size of a system in a proportional manner. In other words, if the size of the data sets being analyzed increases or decreases, the system can easily adjust by adding or subtracting the appropriate number of nodes to keep pace. This allows the system to be flexible and able to handle changes in data volume in an efficient and cost-effective way. The use of the word "linearly" in this context indicates that the increase or decrease in the number of nodes is proportional to the increase or decrease in the volume of data, rather than in some other, non-proportional way.

agree Tony M : Yes, it means it can be expanded in even steps at a time (that's the 'linear' bit) — i.e. you don't, for example, find yourself having to double the size each time.
