In 2003, the company made many sales promotions such as a free gift when buying the XXX wax.
This sentence does not seem very good to me. I feel like putting a verb after "such as"... do you have suggestions to improve it?

or a free gift for buyers/purchasers of xxx wax.
I think it's the "buying" that is most troublesome here. "gift with purchase" is a standard phrase and easily accepted. Good luck!

I would put it like:
In 2003, the company made many sales promotions such giving away a free gift when buying the XXX wax.

: according to the structure of this sentence it is the company that is then giving away the free gift AND buying the XXX wax

That's my suggestion. You don't need to use "free" with the word gift (that's what a gift is)but marketing loves to emphasize anything that the product can do for the customer to attract attention.
