software release and software version? how is it different in general? and how about with Autodesk software? Many thanks.

Generally, when both "version" and "release" are used for the same software, version is the major number and release is the minor one.
For example, IBM and a few other companies use the notation like "V5R4" where most others would use "V5.4".
