English term

packaging / packing

English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general) grundlegender Unterschied
language pair should be EN-EN
Is there a basic difference between packing and packaging? The Langenscheidt "Englische Geschäftsbriefe" says "packing" for Verpackung. Here, only packaging is given. Does anyone know how to distinguish the two terms?

I'm sure there are other contexts but in general I would say that:
packing is all the stuff that goes INTO a carton to protect/ship merchandise
while
packaging IS the carton and can be and is often used for marketing purposes. ie - what color was the packaging? what design? what language used on the outside etc.

However, they are both used as verbs as well and in that case I would just say that 'packing something' would infer making sure it is carefully wrapped and well 'packed' into a box like when you 'pack' a suitcase for travel.
Whle 'packaging something' means again focusing on the outside of the object.

Just to make it more confusing, I'm sure the two are used (whether correctly or not) interchangeably

disagree Armorel Young : What about packaging as a noun - e.g. food packaging - and likewise packing as a noun?
