We recommend using 4 wire communications when possible. In order to use 2 wire communications the devices in the 485 chain must meet the following conditions:
• All devices must automatically tri-state the line
• At least one device must have proper biasing to ensure the line remains in a known state during idle conditions
• The master device in the Modbus chain must have a configurable delay between the time it receives its response and when it requests data again.
This delay must give sufficient time for every device in the chain to transition into tri-state mode. 10ms delay is recommended

Veo que "tri-state" está usado como verbo en tu original.
La lógica electrónica convencional es de dos estados: 0/1, abierto/cerrado, encendido/apagado. Esta operación se analiza por el algebra de Boole y es muy similar a la lógica basada en el principio del tercero excluido.
Existe también una lógica de tres estados, que permite más combinaciones, en la que a los dos estados indicados previamente se agrega un tercero de "alta impedancia", similar a una desconexión, podría decirse que "indiferente"
