Periodical in situ regeneration of the extraction liquid is accomplished by stripping the hydrocarbons with low-pressure steam. The stripped hydrocarbons are condensed and then separated from the water phase by gravity. The almost pure oil phase is recovered and the condensed water phase is recycled within the system.

The application of two columns allows for continuous operation with simultaneous extraction and regeneration. A typical cycle is one hour of extraction and one hour of regeneration.

For produced water from gas/condensate fields, the MPPE unit is placed after the degasser (flash vessel) and skimmer (basis – offshore experience). For produced water from oil fields, the MPPE unit is placed after the hydro cyclones and degasser. Dissolved (heavy) metals, iron and Ca2+ will flow through the unit. In case of iron, limited flocculation of iron hydroxide will not affect the performance.

The MPPE technology has been tested offshore at installations in the north sea. MPPE units (20 m3/h and 70 m3/h) are also in operation at gas treatment plants onshore. The removal efficiency of BTEX, PAH and NPD are 90 - 99%, while the efficiency of dispersed oil has been found to be 50 - 95%. The technology shows good results for dissolved components, but is limited to low volume flow applications for offshore installations due to size and weight factors.
