Tomando en cuenta el comentario de pma, que me parece muy razonable, quizás sea mejor expresarlo como "a mano, sin emplear ningún instrumento o herramienta adicional".

Discussion
Quiere decir que no se recomienda usar el escariador con herramientas eléctricas, por ejemplo, o hacer palanca con un tubo, etc. Hay que usar el escariador a mano y sin ayudas, como cuando se usa un sacacorchos sobre el corcho de la botella de vino. Se conoce que de no hacerlo así podría romperse el hueso (aunque eso ya es una suposición mía).
