There are numerous causes of secretory diarrhoea, including viral infections (Norwalk virus, rotavirus), bacterial infections (E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio cholerae), protozoal infections (Giardia, Cryptosporidia, Isospora), AIDS associated conditions (including mycobacterial and HIV-mediated), Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome (excessive gastrin secretion), medications (colchicine, theophylline, cholestyramine, diuretics, quinidine, prostaglandins) and carcinoid tumours.
