Totope is the real word from Mexican cuisine for these corn(tortilla chips) chips. In the US the word "nachos" is used for corn chips(tortilla chips)in Tex-Mex or Southwestern cuisine inspired by Mexican recipes.

another way this is called in Mexico is TOSTADAS:

See the following recipe for "Chicken Tostadas":

Actually, in the US tostadas consist of the whole tortilla with the ingredients stacked on it but in Mexico tostadas are usually the chips as in the Tex-Mex nachos. FYI-The recipe I included seems to be for the whole tortilla rather than the pieces of tortilla akin to nachos.

Note to Maria Teresa: I did some more research and found that the actual word is "totoposte"(totopo and totope are abbreviations)--
It is derived from the Nahuatl language "totopoch."

agree María Teresa Taylor Oliver : Great research :) You have my agree, then... I agree that "nachos" is a US invention, and in Mexico they are called totopos (or totopes), BUT... in other countries, the word "nachos" is more easily understood, I think... at least here in Panama.

Gracias.I found it spelled as totopes in some tourism and food links (both are accepted)
agree Dagmar Jenner : Sí, en México las "tortilla chips" se llaman totopos - y supongo que en este contexto es a lo que se refieren.
