The V8 Mercedes-Benz engine that's the subject of this article is the M273 engine, which while it's been installed in a variety of different Mercedes models all take the same 33-2181 K&N replacement air filter.

An evolution of the M113 engine, the M273 features an aluminum block and cylinder heads, forged steel connecting rods. The hypereutectic aluminum block is linerless, utilizing silicon in the bores to reduce piston scuffing. A dual-length variable length Intake Manifold and SFI fuel injection provide induction.
The updates from the M113 to the M273 were actually pioneered on the M272 V6 introduced in 2004, which is why the share the same air filter, which can be replaced by K&N 33-2181.

New features carried over from the M272 include DOHC aluminum cylinder heads, 4 valves per cylinder, and Continuous VVT. The system is capable of adjusting each camshaft separately, through a range of 40 degrees. A new electronically controlled cooling system optimizes control of engine temperature.
