The kingfisher lives in the clear mountain stream habitats of Japan. From its bright colors and intrepid figure, the kingfisher is known as the prince of the mountain streams. Three types of this species live around Chitose River in Hokkaido. One is the Kingfisher, with its orange-colored stomach and jade green back. Another is the Greater Pied Kingfisher, which sports a large crown. The third, the Ruddy Kingfisher, which is covered with reddish-brown feathers, is rarely seen now.
