Frans Oskar Malmborg, colonel was born on february 29, 1820 in Kräklingbo, county Gotland. He was the son of captain Petter Gustaf Malmborg, born on august 7, 1777 in Finland, and his wife Margarita Paulina Ström, born in 1782 in Visby, county Gotland. The parents were married in Ardre on April 13, 1813. Malmborg himself remained unmarried.
He was commissioned officer in the Gotland Militia (Gotlands Nationalbeväring) in 1845.
