"Skuplja dara nego mera" je izreka koju često čujemo u svakodnevnom govoru. :)

The yield and size distribution of a potato crop is affected by the growing conditions. To obtain a proper relation between the growing conditions on one side and the yield, size distribution (and in the future the starch content) of the potatoes on the other side, it is necessary to have the disposal over site specific yield and size distribution data of the potatoes. The percentage ground tare is an important factor during the harvest. The presence of soil is necessary for a smooth flow through the machine but at the end of the machine preferably all soil (the ground tare) should be removed. For on line control of the harvest process it is necessary to measure the presence of ground tare at the end of the machine.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tare_weight
Tare (pronounced /ˈtɛər/), from the Middle French word tare "wastage in goods, deficiency, imperfection" (15c.), from Italian tara, from Arabic tarah, lit. "thing deducted or rejected," from taraha "to reject"[1] weight, sometimes called unladen weight, is the weight of an empty vehicle or container. By subtracting it from the gross weight (laden weight), the weight of the goods carried (the net weight) may be determined.
...
Tare weight is often accounted for in kitchen and analytical (scientific) weighing scales, which often include a button that resets the zero of the scale to a higher value, in order to measure only the content of a container without measuring the weight of the container itself.

http://agris.fao.org/agris-search/search/display.do?f=2003/B...
Over the past decade a renewed focus has been set to soil tare. This has also been the case within Danisco. Different approaches to reduce the soil tare have been investigated. The main target is to leave the soil in the field. In this way costs for transport can be reduced, less water is needed for washing, the needs for soil depot will be reduced, etc. The shape of the beet was one of the objects in focus. Does the beet necessarily need to look like it does? From nature, Beta vulgaris has many forms ranging from table beet over fodder beet to sugar beet. New and improved lines have been selected based on sugar fodder beet crosses and subsequent backcrosses. The selection criteria have been low soil tare and smooth shape as first priority, but at the same time maintaining the high sugar content and good juice purity. Examples of clean sugar beet types are given in the poster. It is possible to select for low soil tare lines with high sugar contents and with good juice purity. The sugar yield per hectare from the first hybrids can match existing commercial varieties. The most promising material is giving a reduction in soil tare up to 50 percent compared to the varieties grown today.
