The therapist asked for consultation with the psychiatrist who, observing a tape of the session, pointed out that the female figure was Cinderella. The therapist then could acknowledge missing the fairy-tale clues to Christine. The child grinned at the therapist's apology and breathed a sigh of relief. The adult had taken responsibility for her -- EMPATHIC FAILURE -- and finally "got it." The fairy-tale context was established as the appropriate frame for continuing work.
