Subsequent inversion of rift basins during compression leads to a suite of characteristic structures. Shortening may be accommodated by combinations of inversion of old normal faults, development of footwall shortcuts, thin-skinned thrusting, and block rotation. The geometry of thin-skinned fault systems is controlled by the architecture of the rift basin, with relatively competent footwalls forming barriers to the lateral propagation of detachments.
