New Definitions and New Listings
In June 2003, the White House Office of Management and Budget released their listing of all-new Metropolitan Statistical Areas, Micropolitan Statistical Areas, and Combined Statistical Areas, according to definitions developed in 2000.
A Metropolitan Statistical Area must have at least one urbanized area of 50,000 or more inhabitants. It consists of no less than one county. There are 370 Metro Areas.

If specified criteria are met, a Metropolitan Statistical Area containing a single core with a population of 2.5 million or more may be subdivided to form smaller groupings of counties referred to as \"Metropolitan Divisions.\" Eleven Metropolitan Statistical Areas (Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington D.C.) have a total of 29 Metropolitan Divisions.

A Micropolitan Statistical Area must have at least one urban cluster of at least 10,000 but less than 50,000 population.

Городская агломерация (от лат. agglomero — присоединяю) — компактное скопление населённых пунктов, главным образом городских, местами срастающихся, объединённых в сложную многокомпонентную динамическую систему интенсивными производственными, хозяйственными и культурно-бытовыми связями. Для агломерации характерна общность повседневной жизни их населения, проявляющаяся, в частности, в «маятниковых» поездках на работу в пределах одной агломерации. Граница городских агломераций определяется по конечным пунктам таких маятниковых миграций.

Городская агломерация — наиболее развитая и сложная форма расположения населённых пунктов, преимущественно вокруг крупнейших городов, становящихся в этом случае ядром агломерации, а также в густозаселенных промышленных районах, где возникают многоядерные агломерации (например в угольных бассейнах). Таким образом различают моноцентрические и полицентрические агломерации.

Агломерации в развитых странах концентрируют значительные массы населения. Рост агломераций отражает территориальную концентрацию промышленного производства и трудовых ресурсов. Cтихийный рост агломераций иногда приводит к образованию мегалополисов — наиболее крупной форме расселения.

В западной литературе агломерацию, состоящую из городов, нередко обозначают термином «конурбация».

Крупнейшие агломерации сосредоточены на среднеатлантическом побережье страны, где города Бостон, Нью-Йорк, Филадельфия, Балтимор и Вашингтон образуют сплошную полосу городской и транспортной застройки, вытянувшуюся по берегу океана. В этом мегаполисе сконцентрировано более 30 млн. жителей. Очень крупные агломерации есть и на берегах Великих Американских озер: Детройт, Кливленд и Буффало на озере Эри, Чикаго и Милуоки на озере Мичиган. На тихоокеанском побережье крупнейшую агломерацию представляют собой Лос-Анджелес, расположенный на прибрежной равнине, и Сан-Франциско, окаймляющий берега внутреннего залива.
