English term

(On both sides)

English to Romanian Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Ajutaţi-mă vă rog să înţeleg fraza de mai jos.

With respect to AIDS, I am frankly mystified by the way politics has taken precedence over sound medical policy - on both sides. The subject has become so polarized that that it is hard to discuss AIDS without putting oneself into one or the other advocacy group. Both sides retrench into hardened positions and little helpful dialogue takes place.

Mi-am prins urechile in ea. Nu stiu cum sa integrez "on both sides" din prima fraza. Help! Mersi mult!

Thanks, man. :) Your explanations really shed some light on the whole thing. So do you mean to say that, in the given context, "politics" has nothing to do with government politics, but refers to the set of policies advocated by the two opposing groups? Thanks again!
Elvira Stoianov Aug 17, 2006:
pai din fragment mi se pare ca inainte s-ar fi discutat despre doua grupuri cu idei opuse (advocacy goups). Cred ca solutia este in ceea ce este inaintea fragmentului
BgTo (asker) Aug 17, 2006:
Care baricade? Ai idee? :))) Iar "has taken precedence" vrea sa zica ca politica oficiala a devenit prioritara in detrimentul politicii medicale sau ca si-a varat nasul in serviciile medicale? :) Mersi!

I can't propose a Romanian translation, but maybe I can help by explaining the sentence.
"With respect to AIDS, I am frankly mystified by

*the way politics has taken precedence over sound medical policy - on both sides* "

There are two opposing sides and both of these sides are more concerned about their side winning, their views prevailing, their policies being implemented, etc. (i.e. "politics") instead of just coming up with a good medical policy without regard to which side it comes from. This author is basically expressing the opinion that the issue of AIDS policy has become too politicized when really the best thing would be for everyone to sit down and talk and only be concerned about what would be a good medical policy.

"has taken precedence over" = has taken priority over = has become more important

"on both sides" = on both sides of the debate over AIDS policy
i.e. "politics" has become more important for both sides of the isse

here "politics" = maneuvering for control or power

...I hope that helps. Baftă!
