Taram
Land may be: Tărâm, which is my first option in your case (of a story); teren, pământ, sol, teritoriu, ţărm (first letter of this word is t with a cedilla underneath).

the first meaning of ŢtaraŢ is country, which is probably not what you had in mind.

Dear Morguenna,
Although I might be teribly wrong, it seems to me that you are writing a story and want a location name to sound just as good as Transylvania. If this is true, then take a look on a map of Romania. Take the names of the counties for instance: Vrancea, Cluj,Gorj etc. I hope this helps.

teritoriu
It deeply depends on what you have in mind. For eaxmple, "no man's land" could be translated as "teritoriul nimanui".
