Taram

Land may be: Tărâm, which is my first option in your case (of a story); teren, pământ, sol, teritoriu, ţărm (first letter of this word is t with a cedilla underneath).

the first meaning of ŢtaraŢ is country, which is probably not what you had in mind.

Dear Morguenna,

Although I might be teribly wrong, it seems to me that you are writing a story and want a location name to sound just as good as Transylvania. If this is true, then take a look on a map of Romania. Take the names of the counties for instance: Vrancea, Cluj,Gorj etc. I hope this helps.
Peer comment(s):

agree corin : Or you can use the name of Romanian provinces: Transylvania, Valachia, Moldavia, etc.

agree Florin Slavescu : The name you choose should be related to the subject of your story.

teritoriu

It deeply depends on what you have in mind. For eaxmple, "no man's land" could be translated as "teritoriul nimanui".
