Initially, they showed in vitro that carnosine inhibited the aggregation of alpha-crystallin (the main structural protein of crystallin which prevents the formation of large protein aggregates, a mechanism involved in the phenomenon of crystallin opacity), and almost entirely restored the chaperone role which is lost during denaturing stress.
