inlier

Identify outliers and inliers

It’s a good idea to lookout for spikes and dips in your reports and investigate why they happen. To figure it out, take a look from the outside in.

First, look for outliers. That could be anything that affects your metrics, like a holiday or big news events.

Then look for inliers. Those are things like subjects lines, promos, or offers that impact customer behavior.

Discussion

Mario Freitas May 20, 2021:
@ Richard and Marcos I see nothing wrong here, either. Inlier = lies inside the boundary, and Outlier = lies outside the boundary. Indeed not commonly used like that, but well understandable.
Marcos Roland May 20, 2021:
@ Richard Thank you very much indeed for your clarification! Best.
Richard Purdom May 20, 2021:
Marcos, the text makes sense to me, at least within this sort of marketing jargon. Outliers are freak/sporadic events that affect what you do and out of your control, inliers things within your control (and expected metrics).
Marcos Roland May 18, 2021:
Marcos Roland May 18, 2021:

(2) Inliers — sometimes your data have constraints (business rules) that are inviolable (e.g., Fraction of customers that are Male + Fraction of customers that are Female = 1). A simple business example would be: Profit = Revenue minus Costs. Suppose an analyst examines these 3 numbers (Profit, Revenue, Costs) for many different entries in his business database, and he finds a data entry that is near the mean of the distribution for each of those 3 numbers. It appears (at first glance) that this entry is perfectly normal (an inlier, not an outlier), but in fact it might violate the above business rule. In that case, there is definitely a problem with these numbers — they have “flown” outside the bounds of the business rule.

agree Richard Purdom : yup, inliers are within expected, outliers are statistically inconsistent events,
