Most of the time an engine is running, we want it to be as efficient as possible. A key step to obtaining optimum engine efficiency is operating at MBT timing in order to make the most of the cylinder pressure being generated.
When setting up the ignition timing map on an ECU, it's best to check for MBT timing at speeds just above idle. Chances are that the engine will have a similar value for MBT at idle, and this will give the calibrator a good idea of just how far back they are from MBT when idling.
With the right equipment it's not very difficult to find MBT timing for an engine at most points.

Maximum Brake Torque (MBT) is the use of optimal ignition timing to take advantage of an internal combustion engines maximum power and efficiency.
There is always an optimal spark timing for all operating conditions of an engine. MBT is most ideal at wide-open throttle (WOT), but not desirable when the engine is at idle. Although MBT is desired at WOT, it is wise to retard timing slightly to prevent knocking that may occur and to create a small safety margin. It is possible to calculate the MBT of an engine by taking into account all of the operating conditions of an engine through its sensors. Operating conditions are defined by these engine parameters: lambda, engine load, internal exhaust gas recirculation, engine speed, and spark advance.

MBT timing = Maximum Brake Torque timing. Knock limit aside, at a given speed and flow rate, it is the spark timing that gives maximum torque, (and minimum bSFC). It doesn't mean maximum (or minimum) spark advance. The word "maximum" refers to torque - not spark.
