English term

primer bulb

English to Norwegian Tech/Engineering small internal combuston engines
Small engines, such as on lawn mowers. This is the rubber bulb one presses a few times to prime the carburetor prior to pull-starting. In Danish it's called a "snapsepumpebold" (or just "bold").

"primeren" Found this at: http://www.sovde.no/service.htm

One would persume they know what they're talking about. A hardware store in Norway also verified the term. Thanks for the suggestions.

It's a bit of a constructed word, but one you should be able to get away with. The meaning certainly shines though. As there isn't a word for primer bulb per se, the proper translation would be "gummipumpe for drivstoffmating før motorstart". Suggerst 'primerball' is better.

This would probably sound intelligible to a non-specialist norwegian user, a am however not sure this is the correct technical term for it. "Bensinpumpebelg" would perhaps be better under the assumption that it is the fuel that is being pumped.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Roald Toskedal : Not a word the average user would recognize instantly, I'm afraid...However, I don't have a better suggestion, so maybe we should just leave it at that. You might consider using "blåse" instead of "belg".

agree Arne Flood : "Pumpebelg" is straight forward and could hardly be misunderstood.

Comment: "The "belg" part may work, but can you verify "pumpebelg"?"
