Federated search
In a federated search, users receive results from multiple search and retrieval systems – for example, from other search engines, commercial information services, or internal databases.
Federation is the blending of results from multiple, often non-compatible search systems.
Wikipedia:
Federated search is the simultaneous search of multiple online databases and is an emerging feature of automated, Web-based library and information retrieval systems. It is also often referred to as a portal, as opposed to simply a Web-based search engine. [...]
I know this term from quite a few software applications and it definitely refers to IT here. Generally it means that the system handles processes across several sites/databases/clients that may be distributed and completely standalone from one another.
