nama keluarga
.. as A-MMI explained but I think it is not applicable as far as Malay names are concerned. In English names the surname stays throughout generations, e.g. John Ryan (grandfather), Patrick Ryan (father) and Phillip Ryan.
But to a Malay name, Ali bin Abu, Abu is the father's name, not the family name. When Ali have a son he will name him, say, Ahmad bin Ali. Abu will only appear in the family tree.
Hence, I've always maintained that surnames are not applicable to Malay names.

...defines as a name shared by all the members of a family (Oxford).
...By that definition, can we consider Malay family names such as "Nik", "Wan" etc., as surnames too?
