greensome match

English to Japanese Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation Golf
"The 9 hole greesome match includes three famous top golfers competing each other."

Is there anybody who could tell me what "greensome match" means?

This text comes from the same texts that I mentioned in the previous question.

I'd appreciate any inputs from all of you.

Thanks.

Greensomes

From the URL below

In this competition, players go out in fours, made up of two pairs. All four players drive on each hole. The players of each partnership choose the better drive of the two and finish the hole playing alternate shots. The player whose drive was not taken plays the second shot. Some clubs use a handicap system for this, just taking the average of the two handicaps, others use what is generally a fairer system, taking six tenths of the lower handicap plus four tenths of the higher handicap. A Greensome can then be played as a match, a medal or a Stableford Bogey.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I've finally gotten a message from my client saying that the word should keep the original form in English with a note explaining what it means. I wish could divide the point into each one of you, again. I really appreciate each one of you for taking your time and making efforts at helping me decide the word for it. "

In this golf match, one team consists of two players. In each course, each player hits his or her tee shot (i.e., the first shot in each course). A team can choose one of them, and the players play alternately after the second shot. So, even if player A¥'s tee shot is O.B. (out of bounds), the team can choose player B¥'s ball if it is okay. In this case, player A hits player B¥'s ball.

In golf (and other sports), ¥"XXX マッチ¥" is common, and you will not have to translate it into Japanese, like 試合.

Though ¥"greensome match¥" is a more popular name, it is also called ¥"foursome match¥", since all the four players hits their tee shot in any way.

I agree with Daisuke on how to translate the English word into Japanese. I would use katakana, too.

The foursomes, four-ball, four-ball better-ball, and greensome matches seem to be all slightly different in their rules.

In greensome matches, all four players, two on each team, tee off at every hole, thus using four balls. After that, they play alternately, using one ball for each team of two people until the next hole.

Four-ball matches are played between two teams of two players each, totalling four players, using UP TO four balls. Only one person could represent his team the whole time if they choose to, and in that case, all four balls are not used during the match. Four-ball better-ball matches are played, comparing the best score of each team against the better score of the other team.

The foursomes are played among four players, two players for each team. One person of each team tees off at every odd-numbered hole, and the other of the same team tees off at every even-numbered hole, using only one ball at a time for each team.
