I'm working on English-to-Japanese translation of a car manual. The text was originally written in Italian and then put into English.
I'd like to ask you about the meaning of the phrase “the engine is already pulled (e.g. vehicle running downhill and high gear).” I’m sure it doesn’t mean the engine is physically pulled. I think it may refer to the status of engine such as high (or low) revs or something.

エンジンブレーキがかかる
坂道をトップギアで下る、のでエンジンブレーキはあまりきかないのでしょうけど・・・。イメージとしては、通常は、エンジンでトルクが発生し、これが車輪に伝わって車体が前進しますが(エンジンが車体を押している、というイメージ)、下り坂でエンジンへの燃料供給を断つと、車輪からマイナスのトルクがエンジンに伝わり、エンジンが強制的に回転させられる(車体がエンジンを引っ張っている、というイメージ)状態になります。これがエンジンブレーキ時の状態です。”エンジンが引っ張られる”というのは、もしエンジンブレーキ状態のことを意味しているのであれば、イメージとしてはわりとしっくりくるような気もします。
