Although frequently qualified as ‘British’, the bulldog has become a symbol par excellence of the English and, as such, appears in a variety of manifestations from politics to cartoons, and from advertising to sport. Arthur Reece’s music hall song of the late Victorian era, ‘Sons of the Sea, All British Bom’, popularised the expression ‘the bulldog breed’ which associated the tenacious and pugnacious qualities of the hound itself with the patriotic and belligerent spirit of the British at a time of increasing military rivalry with the German Empire.’ The elevation of this animal to the status of unofficial national symbol consequently presents these traits as typically British virtues to be praised. Indeed, the bulldog was, for a time, specifically but also somewhat controversially associated with the English national team. The dog was chosen as the official mascot of the England team competing in the World Cup finals in Spain in 1982 at a time when the extreme right-wing political party, the National Front, had also adopted it, valuing its connotations of strength and power and distorting its symbolic patriotism into narrow nationalism and xenophobia. The bulldog also found its way on to football paraphernalia during the 1990 World Cup finals held in Italy and was, in particular, brandished on the tee-shirts of the fringe of England followers overtly displaying their nationalistic and aggressive tendencies in violent confrontations with other countries’ supporters.

Νομίζω ότι έχει δίκιο η Έλεν και θα ήταν πιο ταιριαστό να πούμε «η Γενιά των Μπουλντόγκ», στον πληθυντικό. Θα επιμείνω ωστόσο στη Γενιά, όπως π.χ. "a new breed of entrepreneurs", μια νέα γενιά επιχειρηματιών.
