Sociologists at work

Forty-four percent of the students (49 percent of the females and 34 percent of the males) drew sociologists at work. Within this category, two subcategories became clear (see Figure 1). The first depicts sociologists engaged in concrete practices, such as lecturing or teaching a class, asking people questions or observing them, or working at a computer or reading a book. The second conveys abstract ideas the word sociology entails, including pondering the meaning of the social world or comparing groups of people.

Images of sociologists who are large relative to the world (capable of holding it), or large in relation to the people they are studying, might denote the importance or complicated nature of social research, or the higher status of the sociologist. It might also indicate the power of sociologists to make sense of what they view, as would images of sociologists looking through telescopes or glasses, or as indicated by "lines" of sight (Chambers 1983).
