Moves to develop more consistency across health professions are further evident in Agenda for Change – the restructuring of pay, terms and conditions for all staff groups in the National Health System. All posts have been assimilated onto a single pay spine, jobs being graded according to the ¬competencies required and the specification of knowledge, skills and experience. Job profiles are constructed from nationally recognised descriptions, termed ‘dimensions’, and definitions of performance within these dimensions are again nationally agreed. None of these dimensions is profession specific; rather, each professional group has profiles constructed around a baseline of descriptors that apply to all National Health System jobs, with the addition of specific dimensions that describe competencies as they relate to a specific post Agenda for Change Project Team, DoH 2004).
