The current planning system has the following main characteristics:
„h Regional Planning Guidance provides a strategic framework in each of the 8 regions. Regions have a non-elected Assembly, a Planning Body, a Spatial Strategy and Development Agencies. In London, the Mayor produces a Spatial Development Strategy.
„h At District and Unitary authority level, there are Community Planning Partnerships, Community Strategies (long-term vision and action plan) and Local Development Framework, stating the expected Community Involvement.
„h Local Transport Plans
„h Public Service Agreements (PSAs) between local authorities and government
„h Neighbourhood Renewal strategies (in 88 areas)
„h National Parks with their own plans.
The national government plays a significant role in determining planning policy, deciding planning appeals and other important planning applications.
