Coaching Meetings or "Work Days" (which are typically used for Sales employees), are an integral part of performance management, whether or not the employee is on a formal performance plan. During a work day, the manager shadows the sales representative throughout the day to customer visits, and will typically take coaching opportunities between calls and in a wrap-up meeting at day's end. It is used through the normal course of business and not just for performance issues, but generally more frequent if performance issues have been identified. The visits may be surprise visits or set in advance to ensure the manager gets in to see major customers and see the sales representative at their best. Employees with performance concerns can be offered the opportunity to have coaching meetings or work days with management. When a formal coaching session occurs, the meeting should be documented with feedback directed to the employee. In sales, managers are encouraged to conduct both planned and unplanned (or "surprise") work days to ensure a robust picture of planning, skills and behaviors by a sales employee. This concept should be considered for non-sales employees where applicable.
