Comment: "Yes, i was thinking it probably had something to do with railroads but that covers quite a bit of ground as you know. Your references and suggested synonyms were very helpful. thanx"

helix, screw, bolt, spindle
Lefoque,
I'm honestly just guessing. And I'm not thinking clearly, either, because it's 1 am.
vis de voie - spiral?, groove?, winding passage?, labyrinth?, maze?, mandrel?
visser ? - screw, screw on, screw on tight, bolt, spindle
vis ? - screw, bolt, spindle, helix
helix - spiral moving around a cylinder as in thread of a screw
filet de vis - screw thread
pas de vis - pitch of screw thread, distance between the threads
Hope this gives you a start! And that it's not too off track from what you find at www.fr.yahoo.com
Good luck!
Debbie

track screw
Question posted in the wrong section...
Could it be a screw for fiwing a piece of track down? I came up with a couple of hits relating to track for model railways, but perhpas it might also apply to other types of track (runners, slides).

Go to http://vapeur-express.com/base.htm?page='299.htm'
Find « Réf: 411910 Nelle vis inox pour voie »
Click on « En savoir plus sur ARISTO-CRAFT » above the pircture of the screwdrivier & screws
And you find yourself on a page for railtrack for model trains :
« LA VOIE: ARISTOCRAFT produit une voie solide en laiton avec traverses plastiques prévue pour utilisation en extérieur. Les extrémités des rails sont percées et taraudées pour permettre, en plus de I'éclissage, une fixation par vis (qui se trouvent sous chaque élément, dans un creux de traverse, tenues provisoirement par une goutte de colle). Ce n'est pas une obligation pour un usage en intérieur mais ça a un avantage cerain en extérieur. »
