Discussion

Sandra Mouton Mar 28, 2016:
@Daryo Cannot "valet" as a verb mean act like a (car) valet, ie not clean thoroughly the car or here the yacht but just drive it to and from a car park at a restaurant, etc? In which case, it could mean in this particular case, a service where they take your yacht to and back from the boatyard where it spends the winter. That's what I understood reading the text. Of course, we need more context to be able to decide between several interpretations.
Daryo Mar 27, 2016:
car cleaning / valeting / detailing are basically the same thing, the difference being only in how thorough is the cleaning - "detailing" is cleaning a car to make it spotless shiny for exhibition, and "valeting" is somewhere in between.

NOTHING TO DO with any kind of "maintenance/entretien", just a thorough cleaning, nothing more.

There are hundreds of car cleaning businesses all over London, and when they make more of an effort they call it "valeting".

Would be very surprised if "valeting" applied to yachts had a radically different meaning.

It's simply a very thorough cleaning of an empty yacht between two seasons!

Compare with the "valeting service" offered by luxury hotels and "valet parking".

@asker Je n'arrive pas à trouver le terme en français pour ce service de voiturier appliqué aux bateaux, désolée de ne pas pouvoir vous aider là-dessus.
Quelques remarques en vrac, qui pourront peut-être vous être utiles :
- en anglais, yacht désigne des bateaux à voile ou à moteur, en français, le terme désigne actuellement uniquement des gros bateaux à moteur de luxe ;
- dans le milieu de la voile (pas spécialement de luxe mais pour des voiliers habitables de taille allant jusqu'à 20 m), on ne dit pas "hivernage" mais "mise au chantier", à vous de savoir de quel type de bateaux il s'agit.
