In normal operation, the hand controller is connected to the base station and generates commands, which are transmitted to the vehicle either by the radio or fibre optic command and display systems.
However, the hand controller can be connected directly to the vehicle by a short cable link to check vehicle functions without using the base station.

The outputs from the control switches and joysticks are encoded into a series of pulse code modulated serial words.
