Comment: "Thanks to all contributors, esp. CMJ. The debate about the Michelin man was interesting (Michelin's branding is pretty good). I've seen the Michelin man recently in L'Equipe, advertising the guides, he's still called "Bibendum"..."Michelin man" used to be a slagging term for a guy who's got a beer belly, and thus a few rolls of fat around the waist!

nunc est bibendum. he used to hold a glass of red wine in his hand and say in Latin, "Let's drink to this!" until the French government made alcohol advertizing illegal. Now he's just smiling.

: oui.. mais on n'est pas obligé d'avoir une voiture pour l'utiliser... beaucoup de gens s'en servent comme guide gastronomique, et prennent le train, le métro, et le taxi...à voir selon contexte...

On dit "le bonhomme Michelin", le plus souvent... on dit aussi "le bibendum", mais pas "le bibendum Michelin" (quand on parle du "bibendum", on sait qu'il ne peut s'agir que du bonhomme en question, dont bibendum Michelin est maladroit, limite redondant...)

I've used "reconnu" because it's a product, and "ador�" (bit strong maybe), I'm sure this isn't idiomatic though.
Main objective is to get across the affection communicated by the expression, implies a household name, very broad appeal to young and old alike, etc.
