English term

passive interest rates

English to French Bus/Financial Finance (general)
Hi all,

I'm not sure how to translate this term into French. It is in a report I'm translating about a company's results for the year 2023.

The sentence in full: "The cash EBITDA is what we generate from our business prior to paying taxes and passive interest rates."

Would you translate it to "taux d'intérêt passifs", or just "intérêts passifs" ? Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Camille

résultat de notre entreprise avant impôts et intérêts

Le texte source est inutilement long et 'wordy'. La forme courte que je propose est claire, concise et sans ambiguité
exemple :
Le second plafond de déduction de droit commun est égal à 30 % du résultat fiscal de l'entreprise, avant impôts, intérêts, dépréciations et amortissements (ou « EBITDA fiscal »).

neutral Tony M : It's not really "wordy", it is simply (as FR so often is!) very precise; I don't think it is the translator's job to simplify here.

Thanks for comment. imho, the word 'passive' is totally obvious and unnecessary, just my opinion. May I also add that one does not pay rates, as mentioned in source, one pays interest, NOT rates
neutral AllegroTrans : Per your remark to Tony; one pays interest AT a given rate

yes, indeed, of course, and since there is no 'at' in the source, therefore the word 'rates' is superfluous (and erroneous). That makes 2 superfluous words (passive + rates), hence my comment that it is 'wordy', ie excessive useless words.
neutral Daryo : résultat de notre entreprise avant déduction des impôts et intérêts **payés** - you can't allow ambiguity in texts where money is involved. ("obvious" is not a good reason)

thanks
neutral Germaine : Comme ce type de paiement tombe dans la catégorie "Produits", je me demande si on ne parle pas de "passive interest" dans le sens de "participation passive" (ce qui serait une charge). Voir Termium.

good question, maybe we need to know exactly what kind of "business" this is
neutral philippe vandevivere : passive (=debit) interest = interest one has to pay, while active (=credit) interest is interest one RECEIVES. Hence, to say 'pay passive interest' is a pleonasm
