: Without knowing exactly what the writer had in mind, it's hard to be sure if 'tentaculaire' is really the idea here, or simply the sense of 'very spread out'; as for 'empreinte', in building terms 'emprise' sometimes = 'landtake', though poss. not here.

For a start, this is not a literal 'footprint' — when we use that term in technical contexts these days, it basically means 'encombrance' (e.g. for a piece of IT equipment) — nothing to do with actual feet!
Secondly, 'sprawling' does not reall = 'dispersé' in a general sense; 'étalé' is indeed a lot closer, and indeed might possibly be usable here.
