English term
prevailing situations
English to French
Bus/Financial
Business/Commerce (general)
Management/Project management
1) Develop project charter - inputs - 1
A major document used in this process is the business case which describes why the project is worth the necessary investment. The requesting organisation or customer writes the business case and it is created as a result of several PREVAILING SITUATIONS.
Firstly, there may be a market demand to respond to shortages in a particular area or there may be an organisational need to create a new product to improve the revenue stream.
In some cases, there may be a customer request, for example a utility company providing services to a new business park.

situations possibles/variantes

: Not really an accurate representation of the sense of 'prevailing' as used here. / I think you are misunderstanding the use of the EN term here.

: I have misgivings about using 'actuellement', because this looks like a hypothetical future situation (or even a ast one), not a 'current' one.

Thanks ! You're right it's unnecessary and could be confusing, with the time the reader is reading this, that makes sense!

situations actuelles

: As highlighted in my discussion post, I think 'actuel' (which of course has nothing to do here with real/unreal!) might be taken as being current conditions at the time the reader is reading this — when it might well be 'that were prevailing then...'

You're quite right - reason why I suggest to drop 'actuel'

: In EN, that is not the sense of 'prevailing' here. / No, this is nothing to do with 'worthy' or 'significatives' — it just means 'the situations that exist at some specific moment of interest'. Please see my discussion post.

We could also use something like circonstances significatives as it surely refers to some special cases of worthy investment project.

conditions qui prévalent
"situations" plutot dans le sens de "conditions"

: That text appears to be a dodgy translation, and the EN version is actually quite different. I think this is the wrong sense for 'prévaloir'

Discussion
'To prevail' (over something) usually does mean 'to take precedence over' in some way, and equated to 'prévaloir' in FR
But the other meaning, although indeed related, has the sense of 'to be prevalent or common, dominant, etc. In the sense of a 'prevailing wind', this is usually rnedered by 'régner'.
In this instance, it is the latter meaning, though here, it has more the weaker sense of 'to exist (in a majority) at some specific point in time' — for example, "Politicians tend to align themselves to prevailing popular trends."
