Baffles are perforated tubes inside mufflers (silencieux) they are formed so that the exhaust gases circulate evenly, and do not create "back pressure" which would increase cylinder temperature with disasterous results to exhaust valves. The configuration in which they are laid out is called a "Chicane" in French. The actual baffles are called deflecteurs. I've been building engines for twenty five years.
