The symbol variously written Rp. Rx. or R. is still employed by physicians to head their prescriptions. In our country, we have learned and believe that the origin of the symbol is an abbreviation of the Latin word for "recipe." In Europe, another suggestion of the origin of the symbol appears to represent the astronomical sign of the planet Jupiter. There is, however, no evidence to support this suggestion. As regards the Jupiter symbol it is probably that printer may have used the sign as the nearest approach he had in type to the abbreviated sign for recipe. It is believed that the confusion between the two symbols is due to a mere typographical coincidence. A careful examination of the various styles of writing the symbol, clearly shows that the sign was originally adopted as an abbreviation of the word "recipe."

@Koen Naast de al aangevoerde argumenten zou ik nog willen aanvoeren

1) dat de syntax 'Rp only' volkomen overeenstemt met 'Rx only' terwijl, zou het om 'registered practitioners' gaan, je dit nooit op die manier zou weergeven in dit verband.

2) dat dit niet loopt: "Niet voor gebruik door personen onder de 18 jaar. Uitsluitend erkende tandartsen. Mag alleen aan tandartsen worden verkocht.

3) en dat ik weet wat wel loopt, en jij ook.

Klant vragen Het gemakkelijkst zou natuurlijk zijn dat de vragenstelster het even aan de klant voorlegt. Ik vind het feit dat de -p met kleine letter geschreven is wel voor een schrijffout pleiten, en ook dat "Rx only" een veel gebruikte term is, terwijl "Rp only" niet lijkt voor te komen in deze context.

Het zou in elk geval nuttig zijn als we hier uitsluitsel over kregen, voor toekomstige gevallen.

Ik heb een aantal bezwaren.

1) In de tekst staat grote letter R en kleine letter p. Ik zie nergens in jouw referentie 'RP' staan. Ik zie wel dat Rp = Rx.

2) 'registered practitioners' is rijkelijk vaag, zie Google. 'Registered dental practitioners' zou al iets beter zijn.

3) Waar het bovenal om gaat, is het zinsverband, dat voor mij weinig twijfel over laat.

Niet voor gebruik door personen onder de 18 jaar. Uitsluitend op recept verkrijgbaar. Mag alleen aan tandartsen worden verkocht, d.w.z. zij alleen mogen het voorschrijven of anderen mogen het alleen via hem/haar en op grond van zijn/haar goedkeuring toepassen.

"Alleen (voor) tandartsen" vind ik raar in deze zin.

4) Verder, als bijkomend argument, het is mogelijk dat het over dat 'whitening' spul gaat, maar zeker is dat niet.

A continental European prescription consists of three parts:

1 - the inscritio, also known as the superscriptio, is the header of the prescription and consists of the patient's name, address, and identity document number, as well as the identifying number of the patient's private health insurance company, if applicable; and

2 - the praescriptio is the prescription itself; that is, directions to the dispensing pharmacist to supply medication, made up of the following:

a) the invocatio, consisting of the abbreviation Rp; this is analogous to the Rx used in the Anglosphere, and stands for recipe, Latin for take [from the shelf]; and

b) the ordinatio, also known as the compositio, which consists either of the brand name, strength, and number and type of dosage units of a particular drug, or else of directions written entirely in the Latin accusative case, with the exception of ingredient names, written in the genitive case. Masses are written in grammes, without the unit name. The compositio is followed by

3) the subscriptio, which consists of the directions according to which the medicament is to be prepared.
