: without any further context I'd opt for Hoge Raad because that is a national organsation, whereas the Hof van Justitie is European

amerikaanse hooggerechtshof I guess for supreme court if for USA, but your idea of leaving in english followed by explanation in brackets seems fine :-)

hooggerechtshof
Deze term bestaat in het NL niet binnen de hierarchie van rechtsprekende instanties. Dat is prettig, want een high court kun je niet met enige instantie in NL vergelijken. Hoge Raad en Hof zijn typische Nederlandse instituten. In Australie heeft het federale High Court zelfs enige staatrechtelijke functies. Volgens mij dekt hooggerechtshof precies wat er bedoeld wordt.

In Australia Supreme Court, District Court, Magistrates Court is at State level. The High Court is at Federal level. One cannot compare Dutch \'arrondissementen\' with \'provinces\'. Do not try to find a Dutch equivalent.
