This term comes from a manual for a Vital Signs Monitor with Remote Display:
"The system is configured at installation for appropriate settings. This includes identity of the Main Monitor (alpha designator icon), the IP address, subnet, and SSID. Each Main Monitor must be configured with a designator icon."

"alpha" kan net zo goed onvertaald blijven (als je voor een vertaling met "-letter" kiest, is het natuurlijk impliciet wel vertaald).

: op de een of andere manier kan ik dit niet rijmen met deze context. volgens mij slaat alpha hier op de "main" monitor, niet op alfanumeriek.

"Elke hoofdmonitor moet met een aanduiding/icoon geconfigureerd zijn" (deze is dan alfanumeriek). "Scroll naar de gewenste (-alfanumerieke-) aanduiding/icoon van de hoofdmonitor waar men verbinding mee wilt maken en selecteer deze aanduiding/icoon." Toch?

: Ik denk dat Ron wel eens een punt zou kunnen hebben. Overigens zou ik 'icon' als 'pictogram' vertalen, niet als 'icoon'. Dat laatste is heel wat anders.

koppelingspictogram
Apparently, the designator icon functions as a coupling to the main monitor from the remote display. I think you could translate the term literally as 'aanduidingspictogram' (three related, not really relevant googles), but I would go about it a little more liberally and use the term 'koppelingspictogram' or, in context, 'alfanumeriek koppelingspictogram'. The latter gets quite a few googles, although many of them are Photoshop-related. I wouldn't let that bother me, though. Ron's suggestion might work too, but if the designator is truly alphanumeric, as the qualification 'alpha' suggests, it could also contain digits. That would make 'identificatieletter' a less suitable translation, in my humble opinion.
