I don’t think 篡改 is the correct term or captures the full meaning of “fauxtography”. At the very least, it does not capture the possibility of staged photographs.
The second thing is that 篡改 refers to the act of unauthorized revisions. So it might possibly be used to refer to the act of creating fauxtography, but I think using it to refer to fauxtography itself might be stretching it a bit too much.
