Pedestrian congestion can arise from misplaced or wrongly sized streetscape, such as greenery, benches, etc. However, structures on pathways that are necessary to pedestrians are shelters and shades to provide protection and comfort from weather and can be a source of surveillance. Path sizes must accommodate for high traffic areas during peak times which could result in queues forming down streets and pathways. Spacing for these queues must be considered during design as they will impact pedestrian flow and potentially cause pedestrians to walk on roadways to avoid the congestion.
