Discussion

Mokhtar Nabaleh Apr 7, 2012:
أ. فراس ، المعروف عرفًا كالمشروط شرطًا ، التسمية الأغلب هي قسم التاريخ والحضارة الإسلامية مثال على ذلك جامعة الأزهر ، لا توجد شعبة أو قسم يُسمى " قسم الثقافة الإسلامية" ولكن توجد شعبة التاريخ والحضارة .. مع التحية

I highly respect my colleague's opinion, who I believe is a very good translator by the way, and I would admit that he is not completely wrong. Personally, I wouldn't roll out completely neither ''ثقافة" nor ''حضارة." However, I am more apt to using ''ثقافة" since there is a more straightforward meaning for ''حضارة" which is ''civilization,'' as you know. Moreover, I am afraid that using ''حضارة" might divert the meaning away from the original text; I mean if you reverse the translation of قسم التاريخ والحضارة الإسلامية the more accurate translation would be ''Department of Islamic History and Civilization.'' All the best.
Note from asker:
Do you have anything to say about what others say,i.e. the word "Hadarah"? If the Arab universities accept this term, and if the word "Hadarah" gives the meaning of "Thaqafa" then we should take it without any hesitation. Should not we?
I mean if the word "Hadarah" gives the meaning of culture, then we should do that.

agree Mokhtar Nabaleh : Thank you brother. I got your point ثقافة is used in K.S.A, however in Egypt it is حضارة but in line with the aforesaid context; the term to be translated from English to Arabic so that ثقافة is 'Safer'.. Best Regards

قسم التاريخ والحضارة الإسلامية

الحضارة is known to mean culture, whereas الثقافة mainly refers to knowledge, intellectual development, and education.
Note from asker:
Then what will you say if your are asked to translate the word "civilization" into Arabic. Will you choose the word "Thaqafah" for that?

I'm sure that you will ask this question. Well, here we are talking about a department in a college, in almost of Arab countries they use حضارة for culture, just 'google' it:

ثقافة is literal translation but may work also, based on the country.

Note from asker:
What do you say about the word "civilization"? Isn't the word "Hadarah" synanymous to the word "ciivilization"?
