English term

high

English to Afrikaans Medical Medical (general)
The English slang word "high" has entered mainstream use (as has "down" and "blue"), but in Afrikaans we don't call depressed people "hoog" when they are high. The best I can come up with is "vrolik". The general dictionary says "bedwelmd" but that back-translates to "drugged", which is not appropriate to a text describing a depressed person. Other terms that may qualify include "vergenoegd" and "uitgelate". What would you suggest?

dis wat my vriendin, 'n sielkundige, voorstel ;)

Note from asker:
Quite right, I did not consider the emotion-meaning of "vrolik". My concern with "hiper" is that it implies lots of action or high in energy.

agree lexispro : I agree with "hiper" as indicating a state of being "high" in certain types of depression

Ervaar verligting van swaarmoedigheid

the translation of any term will always depend on the context of the sentence where it is used. In most cases the word "high", used in a medical sense, cannot be translated in a single word in afrikaans.
Example sentence:

it my be said that: "a person is high on a drug trip". translated to afrikaans could read: "die persoon is hoogs bedwelm en verkeer in 'n waan"

in another sentence : "the person suffering from depressionmay experience a high after taking his meds will read translated as: Die depressie-lyer ervaar verligting van swaarmoedigheid nadat medikasie geneem is
