Dutch term

Walking Dinner

Dutch to English Other Tourism & Travel
This is from an English passage in a German text which I am translating into English. I've looked up the term "Walking Dinner" on the internet and 90% of the sites seem to be in Dutch. This is why I thought it best to ask this as a Dutch-English question.

Could anyone explain to me what a "Walking Dinner" is and what it might be called in English. Sounds like a recipe for indigestion for me ...

Many thanks

Ian

standing buffet

Given Serge's and Evert's definitions, it would appear that this is Dunglish for a 'standing buffet'. To my mind, a buffet is a standing affair unless specified that it will be a sit-down do. But just to be clear, I'd call it a 'standing buffet'.

-> "Standing Buffets: When you want guests to mingle freely, a standing buffet creates a informal atmosphere. Be it cocktail party, a press function or even a business get- together."
http://www.ashextourism.com/conference/holidayinn_manali.htm

-> "Formal Meal or Buffet? The main decision to be made about the food is what style of meal to have:
- formal meal with waiters
- sit down buffet (fork buffet)
- standing buffet (finger buffet)"

agree Evert DELOOF-SYS : of course it is a 'standing buffet', Chris. That's what we've been trying to explain for over an hour now. Serge's answer, to which you rightfully agreed but for the wrong reason, is not about a simple 'buffet'. Not here.

succes!

agree Evert DELOOF-SYS : Fully agree with the explanation. Translation is 'wandelbuffet'. The important thing is that you actually eat while standing and walking around. Usually there are only few tables and chairs available. I actually hate those things

Thanks Evert!
agree Chris Hopley : If this definition is correct, then in English you would call it a .... wait for it ... 'BUFFET'!!!

Just an idea

Could it be one of those things when a group of people organize a "rotating" meal and all start at one person's house for an apéritif, then go to another's for a starter, on to a third house for main, then elsewhere for dessert??? I know these things have a name, but can't think of it.
Peer comment(s):

neutral MoiraB : my first thought until I read Serge's definition. The ITI organised that kind of meal once (in 3 different restaurants) and called it a 'culinary crawl' - probably a joking term rather than a standard phrase

culinary walk

I have not heard of this expression in Dutch and the hits on Google mainly refer to Belgian websites.
It appears that a walking dinner is a kind of buffet (lopend buffet as we call this in the Netherlands)

Stroll and dine -walking dinner seems to be the term used

You get a guided visit as you stroll around the town and you stop and dine in different restaurants, it would seem a different restaurant for each course on some of the sites. They have concocted the name Walking Dinner-up to you if you want to keep it or change it.

a 'wandelbuffet' would be a 'stand-up dinner' in English. Am not 100% sure what Ian is actually after.

restaurant crawl

After reading Kate's explanation, I'd call it a "restaurant crawl" - like a pub crawl, where you go to different restaurants for different courses, hence a "walking" dinner where you walk between courses!

Specifically, which ones should I be looking at, given that you have graded most other answers with a "neutral", and only agreed with an answer entirely in Dutch and thus doesn't help Ian out much at all (he doesn't speak Dutch).

Dinner Buffet

A Dinner Buffet is known in Dutch as a 'Lopend buffet'.

Walking Buffet is a literal translation of \'lopend buffet\'

The dinner buffet is perhaps the most practical and congenial way in which to care for your guests. It can be either country casual or very formal, as you wish. It provides a more relaxed method of dining, but also provides for you a more varied menu format than a plated, full service meal. In developing a buffet which closely matches your requirements for quality, menu, and cost, we have devised the following categories to help you to choose the price and service needs which suit you the best.

explanation

A walking dinner in the Netherlands is a meal which is often eaten in three different restaurants with a short walk (often through the historic heart of the city) being taken between courses (often there is a guide)
A running dinner is a meal whose courses, in this case three, are each eaten in a different location (often organised by clubs with a restricted group playing host and the guests moving around for each course. Running dinners are often combined so the company is in fact exchanged at each course as well.

--------------------------------------------------

This is a very Dutch phenomenon and as running dinners first originated in the States where everyone used a car I think I would still use walking dinner as the idea is very similar to the running dinner - just a bit more environmentally friendly -and at least it\'s not done on bicycles which would be extremely Dutch.
Peer comment(s):

Safari Dinner

This is the type of dinner where you have your starter in one house, the main course in another and desert in a third. It's good fun because you get a full meal but only have to cook one course!

I don't know if this fits in with your translation, but I hope it helps. Good luck!

To Rowan (couldn\'t comment to your reply):
A walking dinner is a buffet dinner whereby -after you went and picked up your food at the buffet- you walk around while eating.
Usually there are only few tables and chairs available.

Sometimes very difficult, if you ask me.
If need be, you can even get special clips in order to attach your cup/drink to your plate. Horrible.

To Chris:

\'Wandelbuffet\' and \'staand buffet\' are the same.
So if you\'d need a \'translation\' of walking dinner, stand-up dinner (cfr. writeaway) or standing buffet (cfr your late new answer) would be OK

neutral Chris Hopley : In English, a buffet is a standing affair unless specifically stated that it will be a "sit-down buffet".

over here you'd sit at a buffet . Quite confusing, if you ask me. Which is by the way the reason we have the term 'wandelbuffet' of 'staand buffet'

Buffet dinner

You serve yourself from a table on which all kinds of (hopefully) delicious dishes are presented. Then you can either walk around with plate in hand, or sit down. In Dutch the term "lopend buffet" (to be translated as "walking buffet") is often (wrongly) used nowadays.
I have never seen the buffet table walk.
