Tomb of XXXX? Is this a name? Japanese? Something else? The gravestone said he was from Guangdong. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Discussion

GeoGenesis May 11, 2009:
There is something called 「伍公之墓」and 「伍公墓表」on the web, you might like to search for it. I agree with Shirley that 「时烟」is his given name, if so, then you'll probably have to translate it phonetically in pinyin.
Shirley Lao May 11, 2009:
伍公时烟之墓 or 伍公时炯之墓 伍 may be the family name of this person while 时烟 or 时炯 may be his given name. 公 is a title addressed to a man in ancient China. 之墓 means "the tomb of". So the whole phrase means "the tomb of Mr. XXX".
Aaron Gilkison (X) (asker) May 11, 2009:
烟... 烟可能是炯... 墓碑上的字有点模糊了...
Aaron Gilkison (X) (asker) May 11, 2009:
That is the full sentence: 伍公时烟之墓
GeoGenesis May 11, 2009:
Can you give the full sentence?
Aaron Gilkison (X) (asker) May 11, 2009:
Thanks, Polly The gravestone says that the deceased came from Guangdong, Taishan, has his birth and death dates, and that sentence 伍公时烟之墓.
GeoGenesis May 11, 2009:
Can you give more details of the source sentence?
BTW, tomb should be written as 「墓」

Thanks for the help, Mincho. Any idea how this might be transliterated in Romanized Taishan/Cantonese?
